Dark

In this series, I delve into the quiet, raw solitude found within both the self and the cityscape, inspired by the high-contrast, gritty style of Japanese photographers like Moriyama. Each photograph is a moment suspended in stark black and white, where light and shadow reveal the contours of introspection. In one image, a figure contemplates by an industrial backdrop, embodying a sense of isolation against a backdrop of looming structures. Another shows the intimate moment of a woman with eyes closed, lost in thought, allowing the viewer a glimpse into her quiet world. Finally, a playful yet haunting interaction with a cartoon figure speaks to the surreal blend of reality and imagination that permeates urban life. These images, stripped of color, aim to capture the raw essence of human presence amid the unforgiving beauty of the city.

Girl from the river

In capturing these images, I aimed to explore the fluidity of identity and the intrinsic connection between humanity and the natural world. The subject stands immersed in water, her form partially obscured, evoking a sense of mystery and inviting viewers to look beyond her individuality. Her translucent garment merges with the surrounding water, blurring the boundaries between body and environment, and symbolizing how our identities are as fluid and adaptable as nature itself.

I wanted the interplay of light and shadow to highlight the strength that comes from vulnerability. The transparency of the fabric exposes the body, yet her stance conveys confidence and resilience. This juxtaposition speaks to the idea that embracing our natural state, even with all its openness, is a source of quiet power. In this moment, she is both a part of the water and distinct from it, embodying the harmonious dance between human form and the elements that surround us.

For me, this image is a reflection on transformation—how we, like water, are constantly shifting and evolving, yet always connected to the larger flow of life around us.
