Kalahari desert

In 2013, I had the opportunity to visit South Africa, and our first destination was the Kalahari desert. During a bio break, I stepped out of the car and was surprised when a spotted hyena suddenly appeared just 20 meters away from me. While it was a potentially dangerous encounter, I remained calm and appreciated the beauty of nature and this wild animal.

Spotted hyenas are known for their powerful bite force, which is approximately 920 kiloponds (kp). In comparison, lions have a bite force of 650 kp and German Shepherds have a bite force of 230 kp. Spotted hyenas are also social animals, living in packs of up to 130 individuals.

Despite the potential danger, I was relieved when the hyena eventually ran away, allowing me to safely continue my journey.

Fortaleza do Guincho

The Praia do Guincho is a very beautiful part of the portuguese coast just a bit outside of Cascais. For the last three years we used to spend a couple of nights at the Fortaleza do Guincho which is a very nice Hotel at an amazing location.

Early morning light

This shooting took place quite early in the morning when the air is still fresh and the sun gives you hard shadows. We were both quite relaxed and the model is not a friend of many words so it was just a really cool work.

Back to analog

In the beginning of 2019 I bought a Leica R7 at the Leica store in Porto. I believe it was the Portuguese vibes that made me believe I’m chilled enough to work analog.

Two days later I found a workshop about analog development in Lisbon. When I arrived, the film didn’t come out properly and was spoilt … So I had 20 minutes to shoot one roll to participate in the workshop. 20 minutes for 36 photos. These are the results.

I still do analog photography and I upgraded to medium format, using a Mamiya 645.
